Sultan Bayezid II



 
He was the 8th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and the elder son of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror.Resim

He was born in Dimetoka in 1447. At the age of seven, he was appointed as the governor of Amasya under the supervision of Hadım Ali Pasha.

As his father, Fatih, died in 1481, he ascended the Ottoman throne on 20th May, 1481.

In his period, he expanded the borders of the Empire much more. He engaged in numerous military expeditions both in the West and East. He preferred to live a peaceful and calm life throughout his reign lasting.   more than 30 years.

He also gave much importance to the public works all around the country and contributed to Amasya, Istanbul, and Edirne in terms of important works.

He had a qualified education, and he knew fluent Arabic and Persian. He received education of mathematics, literature, and philosophy in addition to Islamic sciences. He was a composer and he wrote poetry. He was  also known to be interested in calligraphy.

He was a religious man and he was called "Bayezid Veli" as he devoted his last years to charity and religion.

There are numerous manuscripts carrying the crown seal of Sultan Bayezid II in the libraries of Europe and Turkey, which is an evidence of the importance that he gave to culture.

When he came to Edirne in 1484, the notables of the city mentioned that there was a necessity of a hospital in Edirne. He agreed with this idea and commissioned Architect Hayrettin to build a complex including a hospital in Edirne, which was a big city visited by a lot of people then. With the financial and spiritual opportunities he provided, the complex was completed in 4 years and opened to the public in 1488.

At the age of 62, he abdicated the throne. While he was returning to Dimetoka, where he was born, he died along the way around the village Sazlıdere in Havsa, the town of Edirne, in 1512. His body is buried in the tomb next to the Bayezid Mosque in Istanbul.
